Safety Net

Memorial installation for David Blakeslee.

Safety Net is a memorial for David Blakeslee, Giusti’s friend, who took his life in 1992. It’s a collection of drawings, sculptures, photograms and installation works.

Hand drawn paper and wire skeletons woven into a ten-foot diameter lace-doily installed at the Baptistry of The Cathedral Of Saint John The Divine NYC. Spotlit from above to project a twenty-foot diameter (approx.) shadow on the floor of the cathedral.

Although also installed in St. Mary’s Cathedral in Limerick (Ireland) for the Irish biannual EV+A 1998, in Florence in Italy and Nikolai Fine Art, the original installation in NYC (St. John The Divine Cathedral,1999), shown here, included the suicide note left to the artist, with the request “Make A Piece For Me,” in the hanging net. Also known as “David’s Peace”, the work is a memorial project to the late David Blakeslee, friend and confidante of the artist. The work is the artist’s symbolic gesture to transform tragedy into aesthetic light and beauty.

These pieces feature dozens of small skeletons made with different materials like bronze (at Nikolai), paper (Saint John) who seems weaving.
