The World is Your Oyster is a temporary sculpture installation inspired by 3D ads.
A call to environmental stewardship about the delicate aqua-culture in the Long Island Sound, New Haven Harbor and the oceans at large. Promoted and encouraged education and environmental responsibility through “edu-tainment” with the oyster opening, closing and “singing” a patchwork of facts, songs and musical interludes.
It was installed in a park by the New Haven harbor along the roadside in 1990.
- 100ft. long string of pearls made from cast fiberglass and pearl essence powder.
- Steel-frame hydraulic-powered singing oyster, encapsulated with plush animation material.
- Steel-cut sign reading “New Haven The World Is your Oyster.”
Artist Suzan Shutan’s soundtrack, broadcast from oyster, included facts about oyster anatomy and the pollution of their habitat.
Sponsored by the Connecticut Commission for the Arts and sited at the New Haven Tourist information booth on the New Haven Harbor.
In 2001 it was shown at Brooklyn college and had a lot of success.
